Youtube Content ID Witch hunt and what it means for me.

Well, we've all heard about it, we've all seen it, and some have experienced it first hand. Youtube channels getting copyright claims on their videos due to use of video game footage, movie trailer footage, or a home made sound effect that was flagged by Youtube due to its flawed automated system. This has many people asking "What does this mean for my favorite Youtube channels!?" And while I can't qualify what this means for others, I can tell you what it means for me...

Well, thus far, I've been unaffected by this recent copyright flagging crusade, but that's not to say I never will. Life and its endeavors are filled with the unknown and unexpected. However, I always thought a time would come where Google would draw a hard line in the sand and say "it's legal for you to use this, but WE say you can't as long as you're operating on our website!". So I never used game or movie footage in my reviews. I use movie posters and pictured, but so far, these are not the subject of the current crusade.....yet. However, I do use movie trailer footage when talking about movie trailers, and so I have to ask "What to do? Do I just not talk about movie trailers, or do I talk about them and just not use trailer footage?" This leads to this recent blog.
You see, I'm a pretty positive guy. Even when I am shredding a shit movie to bits, I'm having fun doing it....which might mean I'm periodically an asshole, but if I am going to be an asshole, I try to be a positive one. And so where others see impending doom, I try to see a puzzle that needs to be solved. A riddle that is "How do we get around the Empire trying to flex to show us who is in charge?" And then I remember "Oh shit! I own JeremyJahns.com!!!! And this is an opportunity to put it to good use.

*TO BE CLEAR* I am NOT saying I am going to leave Youtube and operate solely on my website. My Youtube channel will operate as usual giving you movie and game reviews as it always has. I'm just saying that having my own website gives me an outlet where I can give you videos that the great automated Youtube copyright sentinel might object to.
For example, there is a trailer for the "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes".....but do I do it with trailer footage and risk by video ending up in one of Mr. Creedy's black bags? Or do I do it without trailer footage, resulting in a less "flavorful" video? And so, my current thought process is I can ultimately have 2 versions of the trailer review. One on Youtube (without trailer footage), and one on my website (with trailer footage). This may seem redundant as they are 2 videos giving my opinion on 1 subject, but what might be overlooked when reaching that conclusion is the fact that using trailer footage gives more opportunities for jokes, quips, and moments of amusement. A visual aid ads a flavor when giving an opinion.
Now, I understand that subscribing to ANOTHER website sounds exhausting in this modern day and age, but in a world where I want to get my videos to you guys, but don't want to deal with copyright claims (which gets obnoxiously exhausting), this is the best compromise I can think of. Again, if you want to stick with JUST Youtube, I will upload my videos on Youtube as usual. But if you want to see my full vision of a trailer review that I would have intended for you (which officially sounds like I'm pitching a "directors cut" to you guys), then I will upload a movie trailer review with trailer footage included here.
So, at this point, your support is always the driving force behind what I do. I have never and will never E-beg, or ask you for money, and I've been lucky enough to keep sponsorship for running my channel down to zero. YOU guys are my sponsors. Your views, and support drive my channel, My channel is operated how I see fit because it is free of the shackles of someone who might suggest I do it another way because they financially keep me running, and I'd like to keep it that way! So to the 800 people who have been subscribed to this blog that I have barely touched, I thank you. To you ALL, let's get this website a little more lively! As they say, a body in motion tends to stay in motion. Such is the same with websites. As I upload "extended cuts" of my movie trailer reviews, I will keep the blogs coming (granted, shorter than this one, because GOOD GOD, you're still reading this? I salute you!) But just subscribe to this blog if you could so you don't miss any of what I have to tell you. Talking about movies should be fun, so let's keep it fun and regulation free! Your support makes my world Awesometacular, and as always, may the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce!

-Jeremy

  9. Jeremy, I don´t think it will make any difference. I mean, this blog is hosted on Blogger, right? It means it´s owned by Google. Am I missing something here? Where are you going to publish your "director´s cut" videos?

I think you should continue to do your videos as usual and IF there´s a problem in Youtube, then you think about your next step.

    1. First off, Jeremy, completely support you in this man.

And to answer your question Joao, it's not hosted on blogger, it just runs on the free blogger plaform.

Blogger blogs are like jeremyjahns.blogger.com. Jeremy owns his domain name and is probably paying monthly hosting to some company. As long as he keeps things legal - as he has so far - Google can't touch him :D

  16. Just a question!
If you want this website of yours more fun than the youtube-channel, or might want people more active on www.jeremyjahns.com. Would you consider having some fan interaction here, answering some questions or taking fun movie suggestions? There is a lot of people out there (like me) who would love a conversation with you or just be seen by you. If you go out on your Youtube-channel saying that you will take movie suggestions or talk with fans on this site, I can promise you this webbsite will grow!

    Thanks for everything!

  17. Hey Jeremy, from what I hear starting next month Youtube/Google is making it where whenever you go to upload a video they will be doing an approval of it before you can actually post it, and it's supposed to take up to 3 days.

  20. I've been watching your videos since your Inception review back in 2010 and you have always been and will continue to be my favorite YouTube reviewer and YouTuber so wherever a video goes with your face on it I will always be making sure to watch it! Your style of your videos, for example your trailer reviews, are so flavorful, and fun to watch to the point of me watching reviews of things I don't really care about! It's a bummer you wouldn't reach your widest source of audience (on Youtube) with the trailer reviews containing footage like you've always done but I'm glad it looks like there will be a way for me and other fans to view them through your site. So keep doing what you do and me and countless others will dig it. Love you man, your awesometacular (you have probably heard this thousands of times), and know that I will always be an avid fan.
